Expanding Ministerial Horizons - 20 March 2023
Navigating Change, Strengthening Communities, and Redefining Our Roles
Editorial
Welcome to this week's edition of The ULC Networker, your source for independent news and insights supporting the Universal Life Ministerial Formation Network. In our ever-changing world, it is essential for us to adapt and evolve as ministers to meet the needs of our communities. This week, we explore various topics that highlight the importance of embracing change and expanding our roles as ministers.
In the news, we come across a thought-provoking article titled "The Satanic Temple: Think you know about Satanists? Maybe you don't." This piece challenges our preconceived notions about Satanists . It’s worth bearing in mind that people of all perspectives, including Satanists who agree to support freedom of religion and to do that which is right, are welcome to be ordained as ULC ministers. There are likely quite a few!
Another news story brings attention to a cyberattack that targeted the Florida Baptist Convention, resulting in the loss of over $700,000. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability we face in the digital age. It is crucial for us to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect our ministries and the resources entrusted to us.
We also learn from recent research that the belief in God among Brits is at one of the lowest levels worldwide, with a significant decline in faith since the 1980s. The driving force behind this decline, as the study suggests, is the perception of anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes within certain religious communities. This finding should prompt us to reflect on our own approach to inclusivity and acceptance, ensuring that we create spaces where all individuals feel welcomed and valued.
In our blog section, we delve into two important topics that can enhance our ministerial skills and broaden our impact. The first article explores the path to becoming a board-certified chaplain. Chaplains play a vital role in providing spiritual guidance and support during times of crisis, and this article outlines the steps and requirements to pursue this certification. It encourages us to consider expanding our ministerial horizons and dedicating ourselves to serving those in need in diverse contexts.
The second blog post focuses on the essential responsibilities of a wedding officiant. Weddings are significant events that celebrate love and commitment, and as ministers, we have the privilege of officiating these ceremonies. This article highlights the crucial role we play in creating meaningful experiences for couples and their loved ones, reminding us of the importance of meticulous preparation and personalization.
As we explore these topics, let us remember the words of Rev. Kirby J. Hensley, who stood for freedom, food, and sex as liberating forces. While his statement may be provocative, it encourages us to think beyond conventional boundaries and embrace the diverse needs of our communities.
In conclusion, this week's newsletter reminds us of the importance of embracing change, challenging our assumptions, and expanding our roles as ministers. By staying informed, honing our skills, and fostering inclusivity, we can truly make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.
